Go-Ahead London (GAL) is the largest bus company in the capital, with a modern vehicle fleet of around 2,250 buses, including approximately 400 electric vehicles.  Via a competitive tendering regime, we operate approximately a quarter of the iconic red network on behalf of Transport for London (TfL) from 17 garage locations, mostly in East, North and South London. 

 

Zero Emission pioneers for over a decade, in the process of constructing the UK’s first all-electric bus garage and an award-winning apprenticeship provider, most of our routes are high frequency and high profile.  At a time of change across the industry, especially within the Go-Ahead family, we are looking to recruit an Operations Director, following David Cutts promotion to Managing Director.

 

This strategic position is responsible for the delivery of an essential public service to millions of people living in, working in or visiting London.  With over 6,000 frontline drivers and around 500 service control personnel, the job is subject to intense public scrutiny and a challenging TfL performance measurement regime.

 

The Operations Director makes a significant contribution to the company’s future direction via the annual Corporate Plan process, so the jobholder must be adept at financial budgeting.  Stakeholder engagement, especially with TfL, the trade union movement and wider Go-Ahead Group, is an important requirement.

 

Recruitment and Training across the entire business reports to the Operations Director, who also manages the fundamentally important Service Planning and Performance departments.  At the heart of the company’s output, Service Planning develops timetables, which the Performance team then delivers.  Combined, they are responsible for the end user experience and importantly influence our reputation, including whether the company achieves financial bonuses.

 

This is a challenging, influential and high-profile executive role that needs an individual with exceptional leadership and communication skills, along with a pedigree of London bus knowledge.  The ability to make a difference and lead from the start is also crucial, along with a proven ability to manage a large group of people with widely different responsibilities, while at the same time always delivering a ‘safety first’ and legally compliant culture.
