Go-Ahead London’s brand new Barking Garage was today officially opened at an event attended by David Brown, Go-Ahead’s Group Chief Executive and Leon Daniels, Transport for London’s Managing Director of Surface Transport.

Based at River Road, IG11, the bespoke building sits on a three-acre plot and represents a £7 million acquisition investment by the company.  The site was previously used by Ford as a van maintenance depot and was converted on time and to budget after a 16-week building programme.

The new garage commenced operation in early May 2016 when Route 147 (Canning Town to Hainault) transferred from Stagecoach London.  Over the last two months it has been joined by 11 other services and the garage is now home to approximately 425 drivers and 155 buses.

The building has the capacity to grow in line with Transport for London’s (TfL) projected demand for the local area, with a 300 bus allocation possible in due course, subject to the company taking up its option to acquire extra land next to the site.

The design approach was effectively that of a blank piece of paper.  In addition to its location, one of the site’s many attractions was the ease by which it could be converted to bus use.  As a result, the new Barking Garage includes the following:

•    Co-located operating and engineering offices
•    TfL iBus control hub (to start later this month)
•    A fully recessed engineering maintenance sky lift to ensure easy vehicle access
•    24-hour operation
•    One-way vehicle movement
•    Extensive use of skylights to create a more natural work environment
•    High efficiency LED lighting
•    A water recycle system for the bus and chassis wash

David Brown said: “The opening of a new London bus garage is a rare event and I am proud of what my colleagues have achieved.

As London’s largest bus company we are committed to providing local bus services for the local community and River Road is a tangible example of this.  It showcases the latest technology and is the ideal location for a number of our existing services and hopefully more to come in the future as the bus network expands”.

Leon Daniels, TfL’s Managing Director of Surface Transport added: “River Road is a welcome addition to the London bus scene.  It is a well-designed garage with good staff and maintenance facilities and I congratulate Go-Ahead London on a job well done”.
